Engraved Nameplates: How to Order Durable ID Plates for Equipment

Published on October 26, 2026 · Sticker MTL, Blainville

A machine without a clear ID plate causes problems sooner or later. A technician can't confirm the voltage before working on it, a warranty claim stalls because nobody can read the serial number, or a client asks for model information that was never properly marked.

Engraved nameplates solve this by putting the model, serial number, electrical ratings and your brand on a rigid plate made to handle a shop environment. Unlike a printed label, the text is engraved into the material, so there is no surface ink to rub off.

At Sticker MTL, we laser engrave nameplates at our shop in Blainville, Québec, for manufacturers, panel builders, integrators and maintenance teams. This guide covers the choices that matter: material, size, colour, mounting, layout, certification marks and how to order many different plates in a single order.

What engraved nameplates are used for

Engraved nameplates identify a piece of equipment and give the people who work with it the information they need. Typical uses include:

  • Machines and production equipment: model, serial number, year of manufacture, manufacturer name.
  • Electrical panels and control cabinets: voltage, current and other ratings, panel identification.
  • Products you manufacture and sell: a branded ID plate with your logo, contact information and the certification marks your product has earned.
  • Internal equipment tracking: asset numbers or department codes on tools, carts and fixtures.

In every case, the goal is the same. The information has to be correct, readable at a glance and still legible years from now, even after cleaning, handling and exposure to oil or light.

Why the material matters for engraved nameplates

Our nameplates are made from two-ply 1/16 in (1.5 mm) engraving plastic, Gravoply type. It is UV, oil and scratch resistant, which makes it well suited to workshops, plants and equipment rooms.

"Two-ply" means the sheet has a thin top layer in one colour over a core in a contrasting colour. When the laser engraves your text, it removes the top layer and reveals the second colour underneath. The result is sharp, high-contrast lettering that is part of the plate itself.

This is the main difference compared with a printed sticker. A sticker is a great choice for branding and many labelling jobs, and we make plenty of them, but for permanent equipment identification, an engraved plate is the more durable option.

Choosing size, colour and mounting

Our online configurator lets you set every option and see a preview of your plate before you add it to your cart. Here is how to approach each choice.

Size

Three standard sizes cover most needs:

  • 3 × 2 in (Small): for compact equipment or tight spaces on a panel.
  • 4 × 3 in (Standard): a balanced format for a typical set of fields such as model, serial number, voltage, current and date.
  • 6 × 4 in (Large): when you need more fields, a larger logo or text that must be read from farther away.

If none of these fit your mounting area, you can also enter a custom size. Measure the available flat surface on your equipment first, and leave a margin around the edges, especially if you plan to use screws.

Colour combinations

Eight colour combinations are available. The first colour is the surface, the second is the colour revealed by the engraving:

  • Brushed aluminum / black
  • Brushed gold / black
  • Black / white
  • White / black
  • Red / white
  • Blue / white
  • Green / white
  • Yellow / black

Brushed aluminum with black text is the classic look for machine ID plates and matches most industrial equipment. Black / white and white / black offer maximum contrast. The coloured options are useful when you want to colour-code equipment, for example to distinguish systems, departments or types of panels. If your company follows an internal colour scheme, apply it consistently across all your plates.

Screw holes or adhesive back

You have two mounting options:

  • 4 drilled screw holes: a mechanical fastening, often preferred on equipment that vibrates, gets washed frequently or must keep its plate permanently.
  • No holes, adhesive back: a cleaner look with no drilling, practical on surfaces where you don't want to make holes.

Whichever you choose, mount the plate on a clean, flat surface. Drilling is included in the price when you select screw holes.

Corners and borders

Finishing details make a difference in how professional the plate looks:

  • Corners: rounded or square. Rounded corners give a finished look and have no sharp points.
  • Border line: an engraved line framing the plate.
  • Box around values: a frame around each value, which makes the data easier to scan quickly.

Planning the content of your plates

The layout is where most of the thinking happens. A clear plate is one where a technician finds the right number in a few seconds.

Fields that match your equipment

The configurator starts with common fields such as Model, Serial No., Voltage, Current and Date. You can rename them, add new ones, remove the ones you don't need and change their order. The fields are the same on every plate in your order, while the values change from plate to plate.

You can display the fields in one or two columns. One column is easier to read on a narrow plate. Two columns let you fit more information on a 4 × 3 in or 6 × 4 in plate.

A few tips for choosing fields:

  • Keep only the information people actually need on site.
  • Use the same field names your documentation, manuals and invoices use.
  • Write units clearly (V, A, Hz) so there is no ambiguity.
  • Check whether your industry, your client or your certifying body requires specific information on the plate, and confirm the exact wording with them.

Each plate can include:

  • A logo: engraved in one colour. Dark areas of your image are engraved and light areas disappear, so a simple, high-contrast version of your logo works best. Upload a transparent PNG or an image on a white background.
  • A title: usually your company name or the product name.
  • A footer: contact information, a website or a short note such as a service instruction.

Certification marks: a word of caution

You can add certification marks to your plates: CE, UL, cULus, CSA, RoHS, DEEE / WEEE, FCC and the double insulation symbol. They are included at no extra cost.

These marks may only appear on products that are actually certified. By selecting them, you confirm that your product is. The marks in the configurator are generic drawings. If you need the exact official version of a mark, add it as your logo file instead.

Rules on how certification marks are displayed, and which information must appear on equipment, depend on the certification and the product. Confirm the requirements with your certifying body or the authority that applies to your case before ordering.

Ordering many different plates with a CSV file

This is where our engraved nameplates save the most time. Most equipment plates are almost identical: same layout, same logo, same fields, but a different serial number on each one.

Instead of designing each plate separately, you fill in a table with one row per different plate. Each row can have its own model, serial number, ratings, date and quantity. We engrave them all at once.

For larger batches:

  1. Download the CSV template from the product page.
  2. Fill it in Excel with one row per plate.
  3. Save it as CSV and import it into the configurator.
  4. Review the preview of each plate before adding to cart.

You can order hundreds of different plates in one order this way. You can also export your table as CSV to keep a record or reuse it for a future production run. Double-check serial numbers and values before importing, since the plates are engraved exactly as entered.

Pricing and what is included

Pricing ranges from $19.95 to $32.95 CAD per plate before tax, depending on the size. The 4 × 3 in standard plate is $26.95 per plate.

Each plate includes:

  • Laser engraving, cutting and holes
  • Your logo and certification marks
  • No setup fees

Your plates are made in Blainville, Québec, so there are no customs or brokerage fees to plan for. We ship across Québec, and you can also pick up your order at our shop.

Complete your equipment and facility identification

Nameplates are often one part of a larger identification project. Depending on your facility, you may also need:

  • Safety signs for hazards, required equipment and emergency information.
  • WHMIS signs where hazardous products are stored or used.
  • Door plates to identify offices, electrical rooms and storage areas.

Keeping a consistent look across your plates and signs makes your facility easier to navigate and reflects well on your company.

Order your engraved nameplates

Good engraved nameplates come down to a few decisions made carefully: the right size for the space, a colour combination that reads well, a mounting method suited to the equipment and fields that match your documentation. Once your layout is set, the CSV import lets you produce an entire batch of different plates without retyping a single template.

Every plate is laser engraved at our shop in Blainville, Québec, on durable two-ply engraving plastic. If you have a question about a custom size or a large project, write to us at info@stickermtl.com.

Frequently asked questions

Are the brushed aluminum nameplates made of metal?

All our nameplates are made from two-ply 1/16 in (1.5 mm) engraving plastic, Gravoply type. Brushed aluminum and brushed gold are colour finishes of that material. It is UV, oil and scratch resistant, which suits most shop and equipment environments.

Can I put my exact UL or CSA logo on the plate?

The marks offered in the configurator are generic drawings. If you need the exact official version, upload it as your logo file. In both cases, the mark may only appear on a product that is actually certified, so check the display rules with your certifying body.

What kind of logo file gives the best engraving result?

Use a transparent PNG or an image on a white background. The logo is engraved in a single colour: dark areas are engraved and light areas disappear. A simple, high-contrast version of your logo will look sharper than a detailed full-colour one.

Do I need a separate order for each serial number?

No. You add one row per different plate in the same order, each with its own serial number and values. For large batches, fill in our CSV template in Excel and import it to create hundreds of different plates at once.

Who decides what information must appear on my equipment nameplate?

It depends on your product, your industry and the certifications involved. Your certifying body, your client's specifications or the applicable authority are the right references. Confirm the required fields and wording with them before you finalize your layout.
